Someone trusted you with something important

This page explains how to recover secrets from the encrypted QR code you are holding.

This encrypted QR code is called a block

The person who trusted you with this block created a backup containing secrets — master passwords, recovery phrases or other sensitive data.

Superbacked supports two backup types — encrypted backups and succession plans called blocksets. Which one you are holding is only revealed during recovery — this is by design.

Before you begin

If you expect the block to contain digital assets or other high-stakes secrets, recover using Superbacked OS — a hardened operating system that runs offline and persists nothing to disk.

Recovering high-stakes secrets on an everyday computer exposes secrets to data persistence risks, keyloggers and malware.

For lower-stakes secrets such as master passwords or personal backups, recovering on a regular computer is acceptable.

Step 1: determine backup type

Open Superbacked

Download Superbacked or boot Superbacked OS on dedicated hardware for high-stakes secrets. Open app and select Restore using menu.

Scan and enter passphrase

Scan block using camera or drag and drop file, enter passphrase and select Unlock.

Secrets revealed or scan next block

If secrets are revealed, you are holding an encrypted backup — recovery is complete. If asked to scan next block, block is part of a succession plan — continue to step 2.

Step 2 (if applicable): gather additional blocks

No single block can recover secrets alone — recovery requires multiple blocks and shared passphrase.

Coordinate with others

Reach out to others who may hold blocks. Gather enough blocks to meet threshold set by the person who created the backup.

Scan additional blocks

Continue scanning blocks as asked by app until threshold is met.

Secrets recovered

Once threshold is met, secrets are revealed and recovery is complete.

For high-stakes secrets, use Superbacked OS — a hardened operating system that runs offline and persists nothing to disk.
